Sometimes one travels all around the world collecting experiences and in the end, brings it all home.
DJ Monchan took this type of journey starting in the Takamatsu Japanese countryside/mountain town leaping into life in New York City in the early 1990s to chase the records he heard and dug for after finding inspiration from DJs like Master AT Work, Def Mix Production.
He also went to find his people and a lifeline through records. Monchan spoke no English when he arrived and worked tirelessly to learn a new language, boldly enrolling in a studio engineering program in hopes he could put it all together. His excitement motivated him to take these risks in a new country and eventually landed him in a position to become a part of New York City’s vibrant underground music world.
Not only did he regularly visit iconic venues in the city like Sound Factory, Sound Factory Bar, Tunnel, Twilo and Paradium, his connections and friendships even lead him to find David Mancuso’s seminal Loft party by accident one night.
